Item # 689878
June 06, 1857
BALLOU'S PICTORIAL, Boston, June 6, 1857

* American illustrator Winslow Homer
* Very first illustration in a periodical

This periodical was formatted much like Harper's Weekly but predated it by 6 years (started as Gleason's Pictorial).
Certainly the most significant print in this issue is that of: "Captain J. W. Watkins", significant because it was the very first print by the famed artist Winslow Homer to appear in any periodical. There is a related article on Captain Watkins on the same page.
Other prints include a nice: "View of Gloucester, Massachusetts", plus views of Quebec, Kingston, the Victoria Bridge at Montreal, the Falls of Montmorenci; also: "Fulton Street from the Ferry, Brooklyn" "View of Brooklyn from the foot of Wall St." "The State Capitol at Nashville, Tennessee" and more.
Sixteen pages, nice condition.
