* Guttenberg, Clayton County, Iowa founded
A page 3 article headed: "Prairie LaPorte" reports: "Two hundred or upwards of German families from Hamilton county, Ohio, have made a purchase of Prairie LaPorte, where they are now laying out a city. Prairie LaPorte is in Clayton County, Iowa, on the Mississippi. The site is said to be an excellent one, and the city will be the most northerly one in Iowa..." plus mention there are plans to establish vineyards and cultivate grapes.
Note: Upon settlement by the Germans the name of this community was eventually changed to Guttenberg.
