THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 31, 1868  Page 5 has, under the heading "THE UNION DEAD," multiple, 1st day reports regarding the 1st official Memorial Day celebrations from throughout the country. Locations include Cypress Hill Cemetery & Greenwood Cemetery - both in New York, Flushing, Philadelphia, Augusta, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, etc.. However, the most desirable coverage as that of the events at Arlington Cemetery, which includes considerable details. Other news of the day is found throughout, including a detailed report announcing the Russian capture of the city of Bukhara and the resulting death of the Khan (Emir), the execution of Joseph Brown in Hudson, and a proposed amendment to the Constitution which would eliminate the office of the Vice-President and the Electoral College.
