DAILY DISPATCH---EXTRA, Richmond, Virginia, July 5, 1863

* Battle of Gettysburg
* Very rare Confederate title
* Capital of the Confederacy

A great rarity: a Confederate broadside "Extra" reporting on the first two days of the historic Battle of Gettysburg. As the word "broadside" is defined, this is a single sheet printed on the front side only.
The heads at the top of the first column head: "Latest From The North" "Great Battle At Gettysburg" with subheads: "The Yankees Claim Not To Be Defeated and To Have Captured 6,000 Prisoners--The Confederates Hold The Field--Yankee Generals Reynolds and Paul Killed--Heavy Loss of the Federals--The Grand Battle Expected Friday, etc." This reporting takes 3 of the 4 columns, with subheads including: "The First Day's Battle" "The Second Day's Fighting" "The Fighting on Thursday--Further Particulars "Gen. Reynolds Killed" "A Rebel Brigade Captured".
Also in this issue are: "Latest From Vicksburg--Explosion Of A Mine" "Dispatch From Rosecrans Announcing the Occupation of Tullahoma" "The Very Latest" which includes 2 more items concerning Gettysburg; and: "Gen. Taylor's Operations In Louisiana".
Any Civil War broadside extra is rare, but are extremely desirable if covering a major battle and from the Confederacy.
Measures 10 1/4 by 16 inches, some foxing at the margins with a toning evidence indicated this piece was once matted & framed for display. The reverse has an expert repair across the central fold, presumably done some years ago.
