THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, England, August, 1740
* Life of Sir Francis Drake
* James Oglethorpe and St. Augustine, Florida
There is a lengthy & detailed 7 1/2 page article titled: "The Life of Sir Francis Drake" (see for portions), which is continued in the September issue.
Among the other articles noted in the table of contents are: "Gentleman Change their Opinions" "Marines & Land Soldiers Different" and more.
There is much reporting on events in Parliament under the guise of: "Proceedings & Debates in the Senate of Lilliput" as direct reporting on Parliamentary events was prohibited.
Near the back is a section headed: "Historical Chronicle" with news from England & other parts of Europe, plus a short report from Charleston, South Carolina, which includes: "Gen. Oglethorpe has reduced Fort St. Diego situate seven small leagues from St. Augustine; the garrison surrender'd prisoners. Upon the reduction of this & two other small forts...the townsmen retired into the castle..." and a bit more (see photos).
Complete in 52 pages with full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate. Measures about 5 by 8 inches, several small binding holes along the left spine, some scattered lite foxing, otherwise in good condition.
A very nice pre-Revolutionary War magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
