NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, September 24, 1831
Of great historical significant is an inside page report on the Nat Turner slave insurrection and other slave rebellions, with the report taking over half a page and headed: "Servile Insurrections". The report begins: "We have great pleasure in saying that the report of the destruction of Wilmington, N.C. by the negroes was altogether erroneous..." with more. And further on is: "The trials, because of the late insurrection in Virginia, were yet going on--12 or 15 have been executed...The negro confined in Baltimore jail was not 'gen. Nat' as reported...The gov. of Virginia has offered a reward of $500 for Nat. The actual number of white persons slaughtered in Southampton is 55..." with more (see photos).
Nice, extensive reading. Complete in 16 pages, measures 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches, great condition.
This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period.".
