DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Richmond, Virginia, May 7, 1862 A newspaper from the capital of the Confederate states, the city through which all news reports flowed during the Civil War. The front page has much on the Civil War beginning with a notice near the top beginning: "This newspaper has to undergo the mortification of presenting the reader with a halfsheet..." which goes on to explain why it reduced from a four page to a single sheet newspaper (see photo). Also on the ftpg: "The Enemy Falling Back in the Valley" "Southwestern Virginia" "From the Peninsula" "Partizan Rangers" "The Latest Norther News" which includes many subheads including: "Movements & Spirit of the War--Affairs About Corinth--The War in Missouri--The Sick & Wounded at Corinth--Yankee Outrages at Huntsville--The Bombardment of Fort Pillow..." and even more. Other war-related items as well. The ftpg. also has two "Proclamations" each signed in type by: Jefferson Davis, one beginning: "An enemy waging war in a manner violative of the usages of civilized nations has invaded our country...he has declared his purpose to reduce us to submission..." with more (see photo).
The back page includes the always interesting editorial, this one beginning: "Mr. Davis' declaration that we had undertaken to defend more of our frontier than we could accomplish now demands a practical solution..." (see photo). Most of the balance of the page is taken up with much reporting from "The Legislature Of Virginia" plus a few smaller items relating to the Civil War.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a banner masthead, never bound nor trimmed, clean archival mend to an unrelated article, very nice condition.
