January 05, 1861
THE NEW YORK TIMES, January 5, 1861 Most of the front page is taken up reporting events that would lead to the outbreak of the Civil War, just a few months away, with first column headlines including: "The National Troubles" "Discussion in Congress to be Discouraged" "Spread of the Rebellion at the South" "Seizure of the Government Arsenal at Mobile" "Condition of Affairs at Charleston" "Reported Capture of a Revenue Cutter at Savannah" and a bit more (see photos). This reporting carries over to the back page as well.
But the most significant content is that which lists the various religious leaders in the New York vicinity talking on: "The National Fast" "The Peculiarities of Its Observance" "Union Prayer Meeting" "The Voice of the Pulpit" as headed at the top of the last column on the ftpg (see photos).
Among the many speeches printed in this issue is that of the rabbi of the Greene Street Jewish Synagogue, Rev. Dr. Raphael, his comments appearing on page 3 of this issue (see photos for portions). It is headed: "Rev. Dr.Raphall's [sic] Discourse" "His Opinion of Slavery and of Rev. Henry Ward Beecher" This is a significant Judaica item, his views considered controversial given his defense of slavery by citing its practice in the Old Testament.
Complete in 8 pages and in very nice, clean condition.
