April 23, 1914
THE NEW YORK TIMES, April 23, 1914 The record books note that Babe Ruth's first professional appearance as a pitcher was in the International League with the Baltimore Orioles, in a game played April 22 at home against the Buffalo team.
It was a 6-0 win for Baltimore as noted in the very brief "International League Results" found near the bottom of the sports page, and the only mention of any players is a list of the batteries for both teams, which reads: "Batteries: McConnell and Kritchell: Ruth and Egan" (see photos).
Being so early in his career and a relative unknown to the world of baseball, there is obviously no fanfare attached to his game results, a situation which would change dramatically before the decade would end. Always nice to find items of significant people long before they would be prominent in the world of sports or politics.
Complete in 22 pages and in excellent condition. A library stamp in an upper corner of the front page.
