GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, February, 1796

* Robert Fulton - steamboat fame
* Jay Treaty ratification

A very nice magazine from the late 18th century with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
Among the articles of interest within are the conclusion of: "On the Utility of Small Canals" signed in type by: Robert Fulton (see for portions); "Inoculation the Cause of the Great Increase of Population" "On the Migration of Swallows" "Parliamentary Proceedings of Lords & Commons in 1795-6" and more.
Near the back is "Intelligence of Importance from the London Gazette" which includes mention of ratification of the Jay Treaty beginning: "The treaty of commerce between his Majesty & the United States of America having been mutually ratified..." (see). This is followed by "Domestic Occurrences" with the latest news items of the day.
Complete in 88 pages including the two full page plates called for. One shows views of "Hardham Priory" and of the church at "Chipping Ongar, Essex". Full title/contents page with an engraving of St. John's Gate, measures 5 by 8 1/2 inches. Very nice condition.
