March 11, 1854
SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York, March 11, 1854  While this early issue of this title (Volume IX) has a number of illustrations and interesting content, the most noteworthy item is the rather scathing article regarding the Smithsonian Institute.  It states, in part, "It is our opinion that if [James] Smithsonian were to rise from the dead, his first object would be to try and get the funds he bequeathed to our nation 'for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men' removed from the guardianship of our government in Washington".  The article continues for nearly 1 1/2 columns.

The issue is complete in 8 pages, has various stains, but i not brittle (due to the use of paper with a high linen content).  See images for additional details.

Note:  The Smithsonian article predates the official opening of the Smithsonian Institution Building (The "Castle") which occurred in 1855.
