THE SALEM OBSERVER, Massachusetts, Sept. 21, 1844 The front page has an uncommonly lengthy article, taking close to two-thirds of a column, headed: "Mormonism", portions of which include: "...Any person who is at all familiar with the Mormon faith must know that while they pretend to believe the Bible, they do not believe in that alone. They have a pretended revelation which has usurped the place of the World of God & elevated itself to a level with the Revelation of the 'Divine will'...the 'Book of Mormon' is clothed with the same sanctity as the Bible...Go where you will among Mormon people & you behold the melancholy evidences of the worship paid to his 'modern Mahomedanism'. What a spectacle!..." with much more (see). The article is signed in type: Seceder.
