THE ALASKAN, Sitka, Alaska Territory, January 29, 1887 Rarely are newspapers from Alaska found from before the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 when interest grew dramatically. This newspaper pre-dates the gold rush by ten years.
The format of the newspaper is much like other newspapers of the day, being four pages of small folio size (measures 13 by 20 in.
The front page has a notice headed: "How To Reach Alaska" (see) and an article about Alaskan trout and fishing. Inside pages have various news of the day both local & national.
This issue is complete in four pages, evenly browned, has several archival mends to pages 2 & 3 but causing no loss to readability, generally in very nice condition for a newspaper of this vintage. There is a news agent's stamp just above the masthead.
