THE TOWN & COUNTRY MAGAZINE, London, May, 1781
* Battle of Guilford Courthouse
One of the less common 18th century magazines. The majority of the issue is taken up with various literary & political items, as is typical of such magazines, while news events are found on the last several pages. A section headed: "Domestic Intelligence" includes various items on the Revolutionary War including: "...a Letter from an Officer on board the Robust, dated Cape Henry, North America" with some naval items, & with mention: "...A reinforcement is arrived here from New York & gen. Arnold has been on board of the admiral since we have been here...".
Of greater significance is a lengthy letter from Camden, South Carolina, signed in type by: Rawdon with some nice reading, and of greater consequence is the letter signed in type by: Cornwallis, dated from "Camp at Guildford, March 17, 1781" which is his report of his victory over the American at Guilford Court House. Although this was a "victory" for the British their severe losses cause them to abandon the campaign to control all of the Carolinas. Even more military reports as well (see photos).
Complete in 54 pages with full title/contents page, 5 by 8 1/2 inches, great condition. Still contains one of the two plates called for.
