March 21, 1862
THE DAILY DELTA, New Orleans, Louisiana, March 21, 1862

* Rare Confederate title from deep South

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period. This issue is from close to the end of the Confederate period.

Among the various front page reports are those headed: "Our Lake Defenses" "Army Correspondence" "What the Morning Journal Say" "Murder of a Mississippi Officer" "Saltpeter" which is used to make gunpowder; "American Brigadiers" and a bit more. One of the articles with a small head is: "Church Bells For Cannon" which tells of bells being turned in to be made into cannons at a local foundry (see for portions).

Page 2 has some nice column heads including: "Latest From Island No. Ten" "Attack of the Gunboats on Tuesday" "Several Disabled" "Rumor Of Evacuation of New Madrid" "The Enemy Moving Towards Corinth" plus there are various smaller reports, including: "Capture of Amelia Island" and "Arrival of Troops" among others. Page 2 also has several General and Special Orders from the: "Headquarters Louisiana Troops" (see for portions).

Page 3 has some news & various ads while the back page is entirely taken up with ads and notices.

This issue is complete as a four page newspaper, has light, even browning throughout, some old tape mends do not cause loss of readability, a bit irregular at the spine margin, generally quite nice.
