SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York City, New York, May 11, 1861
* Map of the Seat of War...
Rare civil war map in this title... Early in the war...
This scientific journal, which started in 1845 and still publishes today more than 160 years later, gave very little coverage to the Civil War. This is not surprising given that its focus was on the latest scientific inventions of the day.
However the front page of this issue features a very nice & somewhat large map headed: "Map Of the Seat Of War" (see photos) with the balance of the front page taken up with a detailed article titled: "THE WAR--The Struggle For the Capital". As such, this is a great issue for display given its graphic appeal. There is war-related text within as another pg. has: "Practical Warfare" with a print showing a soldier shooting.
Also: "Hotchkiss's Rifled Cannon Ball": "Learning to Shoot" "Careful Loading of Rifles" & on the back page: "Explosive Rifle Bullets" with 2 prints. Complete in 16 pages, some scattered foxing, never bound nor trimmed, small library stamp at the very top of pg. 1.
