SPRINGFIELD DAILY REPUBLICAN, Massachusetts, September 29, 1920 This is one of the very best reports we have seen of the infamous betting scandal from 1919, during which the Chicago White Sox baseball team was accused of "throwing" the World Series. The investigation took some time, and this issue reports the finding with a terrific three line, banner headline proclaiming: "EIGHT WHITE SOX PLAYERS ARE INDICTED. SUSPENSION OF SEVEN WRECKS GREAT TEAM. WORLD SERIES LAST YEAR WAS 'THROWN' " with various subheads as can be seen in the photos below. Also of significance is the nice, and unusual, front page photo headed: "Eddie Cicotte, Star Pitcher For Chicago Americans, Tells of Wholesale Bribery by Gamblers" showing him in his uniform.
This headline has just what every collector of baseball history wants: the words "Indicted", "Suspension", "World Series Thrown" and "Wrecks Great Team", all found in a banner headline rather than a more typical 2 or 3 column headline. And the added bonus is the nice photo of Eddie Cicotte. You get the complete 18 page issue, 3 small posting holes at the blank spine margin, just a bit orf chipping at the margins, partially loose at the spine, generally in quite nice condition, particularly for an issue of this vintage. A fantastic newspaper for display!
