July 25, 1804
THOMAS'S MASSACHUSETTS SPY, EXTRA, July 25, 1804 On the front page of this singlesheet extra under "Painfully Interesting" is a report from the New York Evening Post headed: "Fatal Duel!". The report begins by acknowledging the "shocking catastrophe" that occurred "...terminating the life of Alexander Hamilton...", with mention that the circumstances relating to his death "...should not be concealed from the world." The report then takes the opportunity to introduce the correspondence that passed between Aaron Burr and Hamilton, stating that the contents would "...put an end to all mistake or misrepresentation." Hereafter are the text of the letters exchanged by Burr and Hamilton, and a few of their subordinates which culminated in their famous duel at Weehawken, New Jersey on July 11, 1804. The text of the various letters take most of the front page and more than 1 1/2 columns on the reverse. The reverse also has a letter from Bishop Moore concerning the duel, signed in type: Benjamin Moore. Under "Funeral Procession" is a report containing details about the funeral, plus there is a small woodcut of the casket (shown in the inset) and the order of the procession. In the last column is the text of "Hamilton's Will", signed in type: Alexander Hamilton. Also, in honor of Hamilton's death, all columns on both sides are black-bordered. A nice item and quite uncommon because the letters and funeral procession usually appeared in a four page issue or in separate issues, and not in a singlesheet extra. Wear causes a small, narrow hole along the central fold slightly affecting a few words of text in the letters, has a very small hole in the left margin, some foxing, otherwise in good, untrimmed condition.
