THE GLOCESTER JOURNAL, Gloucester, England, March 24, 1766 One of the more historical political proclamations of the second half of the 18th century was the repeal of the hated Stamp Act. Not only does this British newspaper contain that very report but it is on the front page as well.
The second column contains several Acts of Parliament which: "...his Majesty was pleased to give the royal assent to." being the British equivalent to the president signing a congressional bill, formally making it effective. Among the various acts is: "An act to repeal an act made in the last session of Parliament entitled, An act for granting and applying certain stamp duties & other duties in the British colonies and plantations in America towards further defraying the expences of defending, protecting & securing the same...". This was the repeal of the Stamp Act and one of the earliest reports to be had, being in a British newspaper. And terrific to have in a British newspaper--from the country where it happened!
