Background: On March 20, 1931, Detroit hosted a memorable Opening Day premiere of Dracula starring Bela Lugosi, cleverly timed to coincide with the city’s baseball festivities for the Detroit Tigers and capitalize on the large downtown crowds. Released by Universal Pictures, the film had already debuted nationally in February, but Detroit’s engagement stood out for its theatrical promotion, which reportedly featured a Dracula figure arriving in dramatic fashion—sometimes described as emerging from a coffin—creating a striking contrast between America’s pastime and Gothic horror. The stunt reflected early Hollywood’s flair for showmanship during the Great Depression and helped cement Lugosi’s haunting portrayal as the definitive screen version of Bram Stoker’s vampire for a generation of moviegoers.
