background: The U.S. victory over Norway on February 16, 1980, served as a crucial test of character for Herb Brooks’ young squad, coming off the heels of their massive upset over Czechoslovakia. Despite the disparity in talent, the Americans looked sluggish and uninspired in the opening frame, allowing Norway's Geir Myhre to sneak a goal past Jim Craig just four minutes into the game. Trailing 1–0 after the first period, the U.S. faced a "trap game" scenario that threatened their medal hopes, but a composed second-period surge led by captain Mike Eruzione shifted the momentum. Eruzione’s power-play goal sparked a four-goal run that showcased the team’s superior conditioning and depth, as Mark Johnson, Dave Silk, and Mark Wells eventually overwhelmed the Norwegian defense. By the time Ken Morrow added a final insurance goal in the third, the U.S. had asserted total dominance, outshooting Norway 43–22 and securing a 5–1 win that kept their undefeated streak alive heading into the final matches of the round-robin stage.
