background: The salvage of the SS Egypt reached a critical turning point in late 1931 as the crew of the Italian vessel Artiglio II defied the limitations of 1930s technology to access a "fortune in the deep." Following the tragic loss of the original salvage ship and its crew the previous year, the 1931 season was a grueling test of endurance where divers, encased in a revolutionary steel observation bell known as the Torretta Butoscopica, directed crane operators from 400 feet below the surface. By November 1, 1931, after months of using controlled underwater explosions to blast through seven layers of steel decking, the salvors had finally breached the ship’s structure to reach the roof of the bullion room. Although the onset of winter storms forced a temporary halt just as they were on the verge of the vault, the progress made during this specific window proved that deep-sea recovery was no longer a fantasy, setting the stage for the historic haul of over five tons of gold and silver that began the following spring.
