background: On January 2, 1989, the top-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish secured their 11th consensus national championship by defeating the #2 West Virginia Mountaineers 34–21 in the Fiesta Bowl. Played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, the game was a masterclass in balanced football led by quarterback Tony Rice, who silenced critics of his passing ability by throwing for 213 yards and two touchdowns while adding 75 yards on the ground. The Irish defense set the tone early, neutralizing West Virginia’s star quarterback Major Harris—who suffered a bruised shoulder on the third play of the game—and holding the Mountaineers' high-scoring offense in check. Head coach Lou Holtz capped off a perfect 12–0 season, marking the pinnacle of his tenure in South Bend and delivering what remains the program's most recent undisputed national title.
