The United States enters the space race...

Item # 724709

February 01, 1958

THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, Boston, February 1, 1958

* 1st satellite put into space by the United States
* EXPLORER 1 (1ST REPORT)

The top of the front page has a five column headline announcing America's successful entry in the space race with: "Space Secrets 'Beep' Back to U.S. As Explorer Rockets Over Earth" and more with two photos of radio signals. (see images) Keep in mind this was but 5 months after the Soviet Union's successful launch of Sputnik which shocked American scientists and caused a rush to make this launch happen as early as possible. And also just a few months after America's first effort, which resulted in an embarrassing failure.
Complete with 12 pages, light toning at the margins, some tiny binding holes along the spine, nice condition.

background: Explorer 1 officially ushered the United States into the Space Race when it reached orbit. Though the news dominated global headlines throughout the weeks following. Developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and launched atop a Juno I rocket, the satellite was a direct response to the Soviet Union’s Sputnik and represented a high-stakes victory for the Army Ballistic Missile Agency. Beyond its geopolitical symbolism, the mission was a monumental scientific success; it carried a cosmic ray detector designed by Dr. James Van Allen, which identified regions of intense radiation trapped by Earth’s magnetic field—now known as the Van Allen radiation belts. This discovery transformed our understanding of the space environment and proved that satellites were not just symbols of prestige, but essential tools for scientific exploration.
