Concerning the battle for New York...

Item # 724672

November 19, 1776

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Nov. 19, 1776  Pg. 2 has a letter from New York of Sept. 26, 1776 which includes: "On the 23rd Gen. Howe left this garrison 4000 strong under the command of Gen. Robinson & made a feint, as if he intended attacking the rebels at King's bridge with the main body of his army..." with a bit more, followed by another letter from New York of Sept. 28 with the latest update on the military situation around King's Bridge, taking most of the column.
Further inside are more reports from New York including: "When the American army landed on Long Island they compelled every 7th man to bear arms...The majority of those are since returned to their allegiance & habitations in that island...The Congress have been endeavouring to remove from Philadelphia but the inhabitants have prevented them, declaring they should remain to share the same fate with themselves..." with much more (see).
Yet another report from New York includes: "...Gen. Howe had sent Mr. Sullivan to the Congress with the declaration of Great Britain to the colonies; this produced an interview on Staten Island between the 2 Howes on behalf of the Crown, and Dr. Franklin, Mr. Edward Rutledge and Mr. John Adams...as ambassadors from the free and independent states of America...". In this famous meeting the British demanded a revocation of the Declaration of Independence, which was refused.
Also: "...forgot to mention that Mr. Washington, presently after the landing on New York island, narrowly escaped being made prisoner...left...a few minutes only before the British light infantry entered..." with more.
Additional Revolutionary War reports are on the back page, beginning: "The people who set fire to New York were those who had deserted from the rebel army & had sworn allegiance to the King..." with much more, continuing to take nearly a full column concerning events in New York.
A terrific issue with much great reading on the military events in New York. Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 inches, good condition.
