background: The July 4, 1928, edition of The New York Times serves as a high-water mark for the paper’s "Golden Age" of typography, featuring a full-page, meticulously printed reproduction of the Declaration of Independence intended for framing by its readers. This commemorative presentation was framed by a heavy, ornate border and typically occupied a prime position in the editorial section, serving as a silent, dignified contrast to the surrounding headlines of a booming, pre-Depression America. While the front page was dominated by the political maneuvering of the Hoover-Smith presidential race and reports of Independence Day heatwaves, this inner broadside focused on the enduring legacy of the 56 signers, listing their names in elegant, staggered columns. For historians and collectors, this specific issue is prized not just for the patriotic insert, but for its physical composition; it was printed during a period when the Times utilized high-quality wood-pulp and rag-paper blends that have allowed the ink—and the revolutionary spirit it captured—to remain remarkably crisp nearly a century later.
