background: On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan while preparing to speak to the Organization of Afro-American Unity, shot multiple times by three men who rushed the stage. The New York City Police Department immediately launched an investigation, quickly focusing on members of the Nation of Islam, the organization Malcolm X had recently split from amid ideological and personal disputes. Within days, Talmadge Hayer (Thomas Hagan), Norman 3X Butler (Muhammad Abdul Aziz), and Thomas 15X Johnson (Khalil Islam) were arrested; Hayer was apprehended at the scene and confessed to involvement, though he initially refused to name his accomplices. Witness testimony, forensic evidence, and Hayer’s partial confession formed the basis of the case, despite complications from reluctant witnesses and the tense social climate in Harlem. All three men were convicted of first-degree murder in March 1966 and sentenced to life imprisonment, though decades later it was revealed that key evidence had been withheld, leading to the eventual exoneration of Aziz and Islam, highlighting both internal conflicts within the Nation of Islam and flaws in the original investigation.
