background: The Ocean Clipper, one of the early examples of the Boeing 314 Clipper built by Boeing for Pan American Airways, made its first flight in June 1938 and represented a major leap in long-range commercial aviation. Designed as a large four-engine flying boat with a wingspan of 152 feet, it was powered by Wright Twin Cyclone radial engines and could carry around 36 passengers in daytime configuration (fewer in overnight service), cruising at about 180 mph with a range of roughly 3,500 miles. The aircraft featured unprecedented luxury for its era, including a dining salon, dressing rooms, and sleeping berths, enabling Pan Am to inaugurate regular transoceanic service across the Atlantic and Pacific at a time when suitable land runways were scarce. The Boeing 314 fleet later served important transport roles during World War II, further cementing its place in aviation history as one of the most advanced and iconic flying boats of the 1930s.
