background: In November 1983, Jesse Jackson announced his candidacy for the 1984 Democratic presidential nomination, becoming the second African American after Shirley Chisholm to mount a serious campaign for a major party’s nomination and bringing national attention to issues of racial justice, economic inequality, and voter participation. Launching his campaign under the banner of the “Rainbow Coalition,” Jackson sought to unite African Americans, Latinos, labor unions, poor and working-class Americans, farmers, and progressive whites into a broad political alliance aimed at reshaping the Democratic Party’s priorities. His campaign emphasized expanded voter registration, opposition to apartheid in South Africa, reductions in military spending, and increased social programs for disadvantaged communities. Although he ultimately lost the nomination to former Vice President Walter Mondale, Jackson won more than three million primary votes and several contests, demonstrating significant grassroots support and helping to increase minority political participation within the Democratic Party.
