AI notes: In February 1980, just before the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, the young U.S. Olympic hockey team, composed almost entirely of college players under coach Herb Brooks, faced the dominant Soviet national team in a pre‑Olympic exhibition match at Madison Square Garden. The game was a harsh reality check: the Soviets, seasoned veterans who had won the previous four Olympic gold medals, thoroughly outclassed the Americans, winning by a lopsided score of approximately 10–3. The exhibition highlighted the vast experience and superior teamwork of the Soviet squad, whose fast, precise passing and disciplined play overwhelmed the inexperienced U.S. roster. This heavy defeat made the American team seem like a clear underdog heading into the Olympics, setting the stage for the dramatic reversal just over a week later, when the same U.S. team achieved the legendary “Miracle on Ice” by defeating the Soviets 4–3 in the Olympic medal round.
