background: By June 7, 1942, the Battle of Midway had reached its decisive climax. Over the preceding days, U.S. forces had successfully ambushed the Japanese fleet, sinking three of their frontline carriers—Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu—and severely crippling their air power. On June 7, the remaining Japanese carrier, Hiryu, launched counterattacks against the U.S. fleet, striking the damaged USS Yorktown and temporarily keeping hope alive for Japan. However, U.S. carrier-based aircraft quickly retaliated, locating and sinking Hiryu later that day, leaving the Japanese fleet without any operational carriers. The Japanese suffered catastrophic losses in ships, planes, and experienced pilots, while the Americans had only one carrier heavily damaged. By the end of June 7, the battle had decisively shifted momentum in the Pacific, marking the first major Japanese defeat and establishing the United States as the dominant naval power in the region.
