background: The Brooks–Baxter War of 1874 in Little Rock, Arkansas was a violent political conflict rooted in a disputed Republican gubernatorial election. Elisha Baxter, who had been certified as governor, faced a challenge from Joseph Brooks, a fellow Republican claiming the election had been fraudulent. The rivalry quickly escalated into armed conflict in the streets of Little Rock in April 1874, with militias loyal to each claimant clashing for control of the state capital, resulting in multiple deaths and widespread chaos. The standoff drew national attention, and federal forces under President Ulysses S. Grant ultimately intervened, recognizing Baxter as the legitimate governor and restoring order. The crisis revealed the deep factional divisions within the Republican Party during Reconstruction, the fragile nature of political authority in the post–Civil War South, and the continuing tensions between competing Reconstruction-era power groups in Arkansas.
