August 21, 1987

LOS ANGELES TIMES, August 21, 1987

* Best "Dirty Dancing" advertisement
* Grand Opening Day movie premiere review
* Romantic drama dance film - Patrick Swayze

A terrific issue on the premiere of the motion picture hit "Dirty Dancing" and perhaps no better issue could be found than this, the leading newspaper from the home of the entertainment industry - the Hollywood area's prime publication.

Note: Where else might one find authentic, poster-size ads for Opening Day showings, in the most desirable Hollywood-area newspaper - as we were lucky enough to obtain this (and others) indirectly from the Los Angeles Times' own collection? It simply doesn't get any better! In over 40 years of collecting, we have yet to see such unique & dramatic coverage with truly top-shelf, eye-catching displayability (see images).

Page 11 of section VI has a review of the film headed: "'Dirty Dancing': Sweet Summer Sleeper" with related photo. And perhaps more significant is the terrific, full page poster-like advertisement for the film printed on it's opening day. (see images).
A quite rare issue as it would not have been saved since it contains no historically significant content. Present are the complete sections 1 and VI totaling 72 pages. Great condition.

background: Dirty Dancing (1987) is a romantic drama set in the summer of 1963, directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Eleanor Bergstein, that tells the story of Frances “Baby” Houseman, a young woman from a privileged family who discovers love and independence while vacationing at a Catskills resort. Baby becomes enchanted with Johnny Castle, the resort’s charming dance instructor, and when his dance partner is injured, she steps in, learning to dance and ultimately performing a now-iconic final routine with him. The film explores themes of class differences, personal growth, and sexual awakening, all set against a soundtrack of memorable 1960s hits and the unforgettable original song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” Starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, the movie achieved unexpected box-office success, became a cultural phenomenon, and cemented its place in pop culture history, with its climactic lift scene remaining one of cinema’s most famous moments.
