1910 photo of Chief Myers...

Item # 723794

January 29, 1910

EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, Jan. 29, 1910

* John Tortes - Chief Myers photo
* New York Giants baseball catcher

The front page of section 2 (sports) has a three column photo of Chief Myers with heading: "Big Indian Catcher is Idol Of the Polo Grounds Fans" with subhead and text. (see) Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper.
Complete with 12 pages, small library stamps within the masthead, a few small binding holes along the spine, generally very nice.

background: The 1910 season captured in that Evening Tribune issue represents the true arrival of John Tortes "Chief" Myers as a cornerstone of John McGraw’s New York Giants. While the "Deadball Era" was defined by low-scoring games and defensive grit, Myers defied the mold of the typical light-hitting catcher of the day, utilizing a powerful frame to anchor the lineup and a high baseball IQ to manage a pitching staff led by the iconic Christy Mathewson. His importance to the Polo Grounds faithful went beyond his physical durability; as a Cahuilla Indian from California, he navigated a complex social landscape where he was often subjected to the racial caricatures of the time, yet his undeniable skill earned him a level of "idol" status that few players of color could achieve in the early 20th century. By the time this paper hit the stands in January 1910, Myers was coming off a solid rookie campaign and was about to embark on a four-year stretch where he would consistently rank among the best hitters in the National League, eventually leading the Giants to three consecutive World Series appearances.
