background: On December 14, 1933, John “Red” Hamilton, a notorious member of John Dillinger’s gang, fatally shot Chicago police Sergeant William T. Shanley during a violent confrontation on the city’s North Side. Hamilton had gone to a garage to retrieve his car when officers recognized him and attempted to intervene. In the ensuing encounter, Hamilton drew a pistol and fired on Sergeant Shanley, critically wounding him. Shanley succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward, marking one of the most serious law-enforcement deaths tied to the Dillinger gang during the early 1930s. The killing highlighted the growing boldness and firepower of Depression-era outlaws and intensified the efforts of Chicago authorities, who soon established a specialized “Dillinger Squad” dedicated to tracking and apprehending members of the gang. Hamilton’s actions that day further cemented his reputation as one of the gang’s most dangerous and unpredictable criminals.
