Ratification of the repeal of prohibition....

Item # 723111

May 24, 1933

THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 26, 1933

* End of Prohibition in the state of Wyoming
* Beer - liquor returns - Ratification voted
* Repeal of the Eighteenth 18th Amendment

The bottom of page 4 has a very small and discrete report with heading: "Repeal is Ratified in Wyoming" (see image) Unfortunate for the very brief report here but still a first report in this famous publication.
Complete in 42 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Very nice condition.

background: On May 25, 1933, Wyoming ratified the Twenty-first Amendment, officially repealing the nationwide prohibition of alcohol established by the Eighteenth Amendment. This ratification came during a wave of state approvals in early 1933, as public sentiment had shifted dramatically against Prohibition due to its association with organized crime, loss of tax revenue during the Great Depression, and widespread illegal drinking. Wyoming’s ratification helped move the nation closer to the official end of Prohibition, which was formally completed when the amendment was certified on December 5, 1933, allowing legal production, sale, and consumption of alcohol once again.
