background: On February 14, 1925, newspapers reported that Floyd Collins, the 37-year-old cave explorer trapped in Sand Cave, Kentucky, remained pinned beneath a fallen boulder, his voice faintly heard by rescuers attempting to reach him through the narrow passage. Reports described the painstaking efforts to lower milk, broth, and water to sustain him, though it was uncertain how much he could swallow. Rescue crews were hindered by the cave’s unstable limestone walls, with repeated cave-ins forcing them to proceed cautiously. The story had attracted nationwide attention, with thousands of onlookers gathering at the site, vendors selling food, and reporters sending updates by telegraph, turning the rescue into one of America’s earliest media spectacles. While headlines still clung to hope, the tone of the coverage grew grim, warning that Collins’s survival chances were dwindling as the ordeal entered its third week.
