AI notes: After the Communist capture of Mukden in late October 1948, the Nationalist Air Force (ROCAF), directed from its headquarters in Nanjing, conducted bombing raids against the city in November 1948 using long-range bombers such as B-24 Liberators and B-25 Mitchells; because the Nationalists had lost all airfields in Manchuria, these aircraft did not usually fly directly from Nanjing, but staged from KMT-controlled air bases in eastern China (including areas around Shanghai and Qingdao), operating at the extreme limits of their range, which reduced bombing accuracy and limited military effectiveness while increasing civilian casualties; the raids were intended to disrupt Communist consolidation and demonstrate continued Nationalist reach, but they failed to alter the outcome of the Liaoshen Campaign or the broader collapse of Nationalist control in northeast China.
