Brandenburg Gate opening in 1989...

Item # 722496

December 23, 1989

B-Z, Berlin, Germany, December 23, 1989

* Fall of the Berlin Wall
* Brandenburg Gate opens
* Best publication to be had ? (very rare)

A great issue on the fall of the Berlin Wall, with a banner headline proclaiming (translated): "Berlin, Rejoice!" The front page photo shows a huge crowd at the Brandenburg Gate, apparently oblivious to the rain & storm of that day, as they prepare to celebrate Christmas without the Wall. Nice for display.
Some very nice photos on pages 2-5, two showing restraining gates run over due to the huge, pressing crowd.
Tabloid-size, complete with all 32 page, in very nice condition.

AI notes: The B.Z. tabloid newspaper from Berlin on December 23, 1989 was a special and highly collectible issue that captured the euphoria and historic atmosphere in the German capital more than six weeks after the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The front page featured a banner headline (translated) along the lines of “Berlin, Rejoice!” and a dramatic photograph of a massive crowd at the Brandenburg Gate, celebrating the opening of the Wall and the rapidly evolving reunification of East and West Berlin — even braving rain and stormy weather as they gathered at a site that had been closed and divided for nearly three decades. This edition highlighted the symbolic opening of the Brandenburg Gate, which had become a powerful emblem of German unity and freedom in the weeks following the November 9, 1989 border opening that effectively ended the Wall’s division.
