AI notes: On December 13, 1945, U.S. military tribunals concluded trials of former Nazi concentration camp personnel, most notably from Dachau and Bergen-Belsen. In the Dachau camp trial, 40 defendants, including guards and administrative staff, were convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity; 36 were sentenced to death, one to life imprisonment, and three to prison terms of 10 years, with executions carried out the following May. Simultaneously, trials of Bergen-Belsen personnel resulted in death sentences for several guards, including the notorious Irma Grese, reflecting the Allies’ determination to hold camp staff accountable for their roles in mass murder, abuse, and the inhumane conditions of the camps. These proceedings marked a pivotal moment in postwar justice, establishing a precedent for prosecuting not only high-ranking officials but also lower-level operatives who directly participated in atrocities, and underscored the Allied commitment to retribution and legal accountability in the wake of the Holocaust.
