background: On March 20, 1995, the Aum Shinrikyō cult carried out a coordinated chemical attack on Tokyo’s subway system, releasing the nerve agent sarin on five separate trains during the morning rush hour. Cult members punctured bags of the colorless, odorless gas and left them on train cars, exposing thousands of commuters in enclosed spaces. The attack killed 13 people outright and injured over 5,500, causing symptoms ranging from blurred vision and vomiting to convulsions and respiratory failure, overwhelming emergency services and hospitals. The perpetrators were followers of Shoko Asahara, the cult’s leader, who believed in an impending apocalyptic war and sought to destabilize Japanese society. In the wake of the attack, authorities launched a massive crackdown, raiding cult facilities, seizing chemical weapons, and arresting hundreds of members; Asahara and several top aides were later sentenced to death and executed in 2018. The incident exposed serious vulnerabilities in Japan’s emergency response systems and remains one of the deadliest examples of domestic chemical terrorism in modern history.
