background: On February 8, 1929, Gordon Stewart Northcott was found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder in Riverside County, California, for the abduction, molestation, and killings of several young boys at his Wineville chicken farm—a case that would later become infamous as the Wineville Chicken Coop murders. Born in Canada in 1906, Northcott had moved to California and established the farm, where he lured boys from the community under false pretenses before committing his crimes. The trial, which lasted 27 days, drew intense public attention due to the horrific nature of the offenses, including the disappearance of nine-year-old Walter Collins, and Northcott’s own partial confessions. Although convicted of only three murders, he was suspected of killing many more, and the community’s revulsion led to the town changing its name from Wineville to Mira Loma to escape the stigma. Following the guilty verdict, Northcott was sentenced to death on February 13, 1929, and he was executed by hanging at San Quentin State Prison on October 2, 1930.
