background: On the morning of October 12, 1937, in downtown Bangor, Maine, Washington Street (now Central Street) became the site of a dramatic ambush: the notorious criminal Alfred James “Al” Brady, dubbed “Public Enemy No. 1” by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and his side‑kick Clarence Lee Shaffer Jr. had traveled there in a stolen Buick with the intent to purchase Thompson sub‑machine guns at Dakin’s Sporting Goods Store. The store owner, suspicious of their large‑cash transaction, alerted law‑enforcement, and agents laid a careful stakeout.
Federal Bureau of Investigation. At approximately 8:30 a.m., Brady and Shaffer emerged from the automobile brandishing weapons as their third accomplice James Dalhover entered the store. A brief but fierce gun‑battle ensued: Brady and Shaffer were fatally shot by the FBI and local officers, while Dalhover was arrested on the spot. The event ended a crime‑spree that numbered dozens of robberies and confirmed Bangor’s place in the annals of early‑20th‑century law‑enforcement history.
