background: Top Row, a bay stallion foaled in 1931 and bred by Elsie Cassatt Stewart, pulled off a commanding victory in the 1936 Santa Anita Handicap (then the world’s richest horse race) at 1¼ miles, registering a time of 2:04.20 while carrying the colours of owner‑trainer Albert A. Baroni and ridden by jockey Wayne D. Wright. Prior to this triumph, Top Row had already set a world record for a mile and a sixteenth in 1934, and his victory in the Santa Anita marked the apex of his racing career, helping elevate his damsire High Time to leading broodmare sire status in North America.
