background: On November 22, 1929, Amelia Earhart set a new women’s world speed record when she piloted her bright red Lockheed Vega over a timed course at 184.17 miles per hour (296.34 km/h) near Los Angeles, California, a performance officially certified by the National Aeronautic Association and the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. The record flight demonstrated both Earhart’s growing technical skill and the Vega’s advanced design, featuring a powerful Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine and streamlined monoplane construction that made it one of the fastest aircraft of its day. This accomplishment came only months after Earhart helped found the Ninety-Nines, an organization for women pilots, and further established her as America’s leading female aviator, paving the way for her later long-distance and altitude records in the early 1930s.
