background: On February 22, 1936, Robert Wadlow, who would later become known as the tallest person in recorded history, celebrated his 18th birthday. Born in Alton, Illinois, in 1918, Wadlow had already begun to exhibit extraordinary growth due to hyperplasia of his pituitary gland, which caused an abnormally high level of growth hormone. By this point in his life, he had already surpassed 7 feet in height, and his remarkable stature was attracting public attention. Despite his towering size, Wadlow was known for his gentle demeanor and intelligence, and he would continue to grow well beyond the average human height, ultimately reaching 8 feet 11 inches by the time of his death in 1940. His 18th birthday marked a milestone in a life that was extraordinary in both physical dimensions and public fascination.
