Eugene Burton Ely... First shipboard airplane landing fame...

Item # 721357

January 25, 1911

THE EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, Jan. 25, 1911

* Aviator pioneer Eugene Burton Ely
* 1st shipboard airplane landing fame
* USS Pennsylvania cruiser
* Predecessor to the modern day aircraft carrier
* City of San Diego visit announcement

The top of the front page has a three column headline: "ELY, WHO MADE FAMOUS WARSHIP FLIGHT, COMES TO SAN DIEGO ON FRIDAY" with subheads (see images) Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper.
Complete with 10 pages, small library stamps within the masthead, irregular along the spine, generally very nice.

AI notes: In late January 1911, aviator Eugene Burton Ely visited the winter flying camp at North Island in San Diego Bay, where Glenn H. Curtiss had established a winter aviation school in cooperation with the Aero Club of San Diego. According to the U.S. Navy’s historical record, Ely wrote from San Diego on 30 January, indicating he was in the region to consult on naval aviation plans. During this period the San Diego camp hosted public exhibition flights on 26 and 27 January, and though precise documentation of Ely’s individual aerial demonstrations is scarce, his presence and participation in the activities there aligns with his broader role as a pioneer of naval aviation and exhibition pilot.
