AI notes: The Independent Chronicle & Universal Advertiser, published in Boston from 1776, was one of the most outspoken Patriot newspapers of the Revolutionary era, carrying forward the radical spirit of earlier Fleet family publications. Edited and printed by Thomas and John Fleet, it became a leading voice for independence, issuing scathing critiques of British rule, Loyalist writers, and royal authority while championing the Continental Congress and the emerging American cause. The paper not only reported on battles and political developments but also served as a vehicle for fiery essays, patriotic poetry, and official proclamations designed to rally public sentiment. Its bold tone made it both influential and controversial, helping to shape revolutionary opinion throughout New England. After the Revolution, the Independent Chronicle remained a fixture in Boston journalism, continuing into the early 19th century, though its rhetoric moderated as the new republic took form and partisan politics replaced the earlier struggle against Britain.
