background: On August 1, 1937, the French ocean liner SS Normandie set a new eastbound transatlantic speed record, reclaiming the coveted Blue Riband for France. Departing from New York and bound for Southampton, the Normandie completed the crossing in 3 days, 22 hours, and 7 minutes, averaging about 30.58 knots (approximately 35 mph or 56.6 km/h). This achievement made her, once again, the fastest ship on the Atlantic. The Normandie, celebrated for her luxurious Art Deco design and advanced engineering, had already set records on her maiden voyage in 1935 but had lost the title to the British liner Queen Mary in 1936. Her 1937 record run represented both national pride for France and the peak of interwar ocean liner competition before the outbreak of World War II ended the great transatlantic speed rivalry.
