Item # 720119

March 11, 1935

THE NEW YORK TIMES, March 11, 1935

* Albert H. Fish trial - creepy acts
* Serial killer, child rapist and cannibal
* "The Boogey Man" - "Gray Man"
* "Brooklyn Vampire" - "Werewolf of Wysteria"

The top of page 11 has a one column heading: "FISH ON TRIAL EVE, WOUNDS HIMSELF" with subheads. (see images) I suspect this is one of the few publications to report this particular event as other titles in our inventory do not, probably because he committed his crimes locally and didn't become infamous until after the fact. Rare as such.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 36 pages, rag edition in very nice condition.

AI notes: While awaiting trial in March 1935 at the Westchester County Jail, Albert Fish shocked guards with the extent of his self-mutilation. A lifelong masochist, he regularly inserted sharp objects into his own body, and during his confinement he continued this practice, driving sewing needles deep into his groin, abdomen, and pelvis. When doctors finally examined him, X-rays revealed an astonishing 29 needles embedded throughout his pelvic region, some of them rusted and decades old, along with evidence of other injuries he had inflicted on himself over time. He was also known to beat himself with a studded paddle and press pieces of wool soaked in lighter fluid against his skin before setting them alight. These acts weren’t suicide attempts but an extension of his compulsive self-torture, which jail officials and psychiatrists documented as part of his extreme sadomasochistic pathology.
